1). Implemented a results-driven model of: "Accountability, Transparency, Professionalism, Progression, Performance Measures, Reform & Results" [All officers]
  • Held all MALIKs accountable; from neos to founders, and everyone in between.
  • National officers equally held accountable. Nationals reported to the Brotherhood.
  • “Checks & Balances” to ensure order, discipline and organization.
  • Paradigm shift from “Party & Play” to a business model of "Accountability, Progression and Professionalism".
  • Laid the groundwork and foundation to operate as a national organization and no longer as a “social club”.

2). Held National Conventions Every Year [All officers]
  • Held a convention every year during our 4 year term (4 conventions in total).
  • Submitted Convention Agenda to Brotherhood in advance.
  • Provided forums to air grievances at every convention


2a). Presented and provided yearly officer reports to membership at every convention [All officers]

  • Attendees were supplied with a folder containing a report from each officer of what they had done for the past year i.e. President's Report, Supreme's Report, Treasurer's Report, etc.

  • All officers answered all questions from members.
  • Transparency & Accountability

6). Accountability Measures on E-groups [Atul]
  • Cursing and disrespecting of Brothers will no longer be tolerated - Brothers will be held accountable for their words and actions.
  • Suspensions include everyone from neos to founders, everyone in between, national officers (ourselves), anyone. No one was above MALIK.

7). Established a national postal address [Atul]
  • MALIK Fraternity, Inc. P.O. Box 1277 New York, NY 10027 (Harlem)

8). Implemented “State of the Kingdom" Addresses [Atul]

  • As President, I gave reports/updates of the administration's progress of each office (President, Supreme, Treasurer, Representative, etc.)
  • Answered any and all questions from the Brotherhood.
  • Distributed Reports semi-annually via e-groups and annually via regular mail. 4 years x 2 reports p/year = 8 Reports.

9). Official Recognition and Chartering of Kingdoms By A National Office (via vote at 2004 National Convention) [Luqman/Atul]
  • Genesis, Alif, Baa, Taa, Thaa, Jeem, Ha, Kha, Dal, Thaal, Ra, & Zay.

10). Planned, Organized and Coordinated MALIK’s 25th "Silver Anniversary Gala" [Bryon]
  • Held at The Grand Prospect Hall ballroom in Brooklyn, NY (October 12, 2002).

11). Re-established, enforced and upheld the national financial dues structure once and for all [All officers]
  • All national officers paid dues as well.
  • Dues-paying membership received financial statements every 6 months.

12). Re-established the system of recognizing only dues-paying “Active” brothers to vote [All officers]
13). Completely Overhauled the Treasurer's Office & Implemented mid & long range financial goals for the Fraternity [Everton]
  • Vision was to set the stage for each administration to at least double the prior admin's financial successes. Inevitably with the goal to purchase property for a MALIK Building in Harlem in which the National office could conduct business and for the Fraternity to hold meetings, events & community programs.

14). Fraternity History made by breaking and surpassing all previous Treasurers' efforts and creating a new financial standard for MALIK Fraternity [Everton]
  • Entered office and inherited $500 to work with.
  • Thereafter, the Fraternity made profit every year thanks to dues, cutting costs & the financial savvy of Everton Lawrence:
- Year(s) X = 1977-2001 Fiscal Year(s) End Average Total: $500.00 (0% growth).
- Year 1 = 2002 Fiscal Year End Total: $5,813.75 (1,062% growth).
- Year 2 = 2003 Fiscal Year End Total: $10,339.71 (178% growth).
- Year 3 = 2004 Fiscal Year End Total: $16,370.78 (158% growth).
- Year 4 = 2005 Fiscal Year End total: $26,678.06 (163% growth).
  • Ended office term giving the next administration $26,678.06 to work with. A historic increase of approximately 5,335% net growth. Never before seen in MALIK history.
  • The next administration [Guerrero Administration 2005-2009] continued with our fiscal blueprint, making history again by turning $26,678 to $63,000 at the end of his term.
  • Our administration set the trend/goal for each administration to (at least) double the Fraternity's bank account every four years.
  • Goal was to eventually save enough to purchase a MALIK building in Harlem to function as our international headquarters to hold our meetings and community events.

15.) Established IRA and Money Market Accounts [Everton]
  • A first in MALIK history.

16.) Opened up MALIK Fraternity American Express credit cards to establish good credit history for the Fraternity [Everton]
  • A first in MALIK history.

18.) Developed a fiscal mechanism for every event where cost efficiency and effective planning were instituted resulting in successful outcomes [All Officers]
  • Translation: All events paid for themselves and/or made profit!

19.) Implemented cost control measures and fiscal accountability policies whereby the organization was able to conscientiously germinate and grow into a sustainable and responsible fiscal being [All Officers]
  • All fiscal problems/issues were solved solely by via e-board.
  • We did not hire any outside party or form any committees (we don't do committees) or delegate responsibilties. Everything was done "in-house" by Nationals.
  • Cut costs by doing things/sacrificing ourselves. Everything was done "in-house" i.e. creating the website ourselves, investigating tax liability ourselves, incorporation issues, auditing, design, etc. Maximized low or no cost resources for greater returns.
  • No MALIK Retreats, no presidential retreats, no reimbursement for travel expenses, no special privelages.
  • He held ourselves accountable.We freely and proudly displayed our bookkeeping for the public to see.
  • In total Nationals spent less than $298 in 4 years.
  • Saved thousands in consulting fees which saved money for the Fraternity.
  • Demonstrated a standard of competence and savvy all national officers should possess.

20.) Coordinated MALIK Family Day Picnics (held every summer)

21). Overhauled, reformed, and refined the pledge process [Luqman]
  • Halted all pledging for the first year to overhaul and refine pledge process.
  • Held pledging seminars and workshops for undergrads.
  • Creation of M100 and numerous other forms.

22.) Redesigned and Distributed Membership Certificates [Luqman]

23). Created and implemented the creation of a standardized Open House and Interest Meeting template [Luqman]

24). Re-established the standard of proper attire at all National meetings [All officers]
  • (shirt & tie or indigenous garb).


25). Implemented a “MALIK Back-to-Basics” paradigm shift [All officers]
  • Focus and Priority back on MALIK Mission, academics, building an organization, knowledge of self, obligation to the community, etc.
  • Realigned focus on foundational concepts and realities vs the social myopia of entertainment and step shows.
  • Instilled the theme of self reliance and the generation of success in a For Men By Men approach vs focusing on relying on women as the sole means of accomplishing our goals....

26). Re-connection, reaffirmation, and commitment to our Latino community [All officers]
  • Evident in workshops, banners, brochures, Latino community outreach.

27). Formulation of the Fraternity’s first graduate/alumni/professional structure in MALIK history: The Shabazz Kingdom [All officers]
  • Voted upon and passed at the 2003 National Convention.
  • Founded the Graduate/Alumni/Professional Chapter concept “Shabazz” (Luqman/Atul/Bryon)
  • Originally conceptualized while at SUNY Albany when brothers (Luqman/Atul/Bryon) were in graduate school (2000). Luqman researched and proposed the actual name “Shabazz,” its significance and ritual which was approved by the Brotherhood at Convention.
  • Purpose: To recruit those brothers on the professional/“real life” level (outside of the undergraduate level).

28). Creation of a template/manual for formation of graduate chapters for MALIK [Luqman]
  • Drive to get the alumni back and involved.
  • Created and implemented the MALIK, Developing Partnerships & Strategies to Address Fraternity Priorities

29). Created and established the graduate chapter ceremony [Luqman]

30). Designed and established the graduate chapter pledge process [Luqman]

31). Creation of The NYC Shabazz Chapter: The First official Graduate Chapter in MALIK history [All officers & founding Shabazz members]

32). Re-implementation and reinforced the 2.5 GPA pledging requirement [Luqman]

33). Implementation of a “pledging debriefing” by nationals [All officers]

34). Finalized and implemented the National Board of Elders as per the constitution [All officers]

35). Creation of National Board Concept of: "Voting Power of 11” [All officers & Elders]
  • Negotiated voting and accountability power of National Board: 5 votes from Executive Committee, 5 Votes from Elders and 1 vote from National Advocate: totaling 11 votes. Approved and voted upon at Convention.
  • Council of Elders: Larry Martin, Mario Guerrero, Michael Williams, Hugh Lawrence Jr., & Erskine Isaacs
  • National Public Advocate: David Sang

36). Creation of uniform standard national office MALIK letterheads

37). Addressed, investigated and solved the fraternity’s Incorporation & Tax Problem [Everton/Luqman]
  • Saved thousands in lawyer and consultation fees
  • Cost to Fraternity = $0.00

38). Achieved federally exempt 501(c)10 not-for-profit status for the first time in Fraternity's history [Everton]
  • Achieved federally exempt 501(c)10 status for the first time in Fraternity's history which included a FEIN.
  • Everton consolidated all chapters and members' finances into one entity and established 3 years of financial records to the IRS. The IRS rewarded the Fraternity for its hard work and sacrifice by granting us 501(c) status.
  • Now eligible to recieve grants.
  • Annual dues are now tax-deductible.
  • All above are a history-making first for MALIK.

39). Secured Insurance for both the national organization and for active every undergraduate chapter [Everton]

40). Met with every school administration of all active undergraduate chapters to establish a viable working relationship [Luqman]

41). Produced annual financial statements and quarterly earnings statements to membership [Everton]

42). Designed the MALIK Fraternity national banner, Shabazz grad chapter banner and banners of every undergrad chapter [Atul]

  • A centralized, top-down approach.
  • "Take it up... or take it down" philosophy.
  • No delegating responsibilities, no committees, no regionals - just results.

45). Implemented “chapter, undergraduate, and graduate of the year” awards [All officers]

46). Democratically reviewed and “fine-tuned” the national constitution at every convention (all staff & members)

47). Provided incentives for Brothers to pay membership dues [Everton]
  • Hertz car rental discount.
  • Working Advantage – Discounts for hotels, travel, Broadway shows and sporting events.
  • Discounts on para, etc.

48). Creation of the first online MALIK Paraphernalia Store "The Bahari" [Luqman/Everton]
  • MALIK items for sale (designed by Everton & Luqman). i.e. shirts, watches, cuff links, dog tags, etc.

  • Different chapters were pledging initiates different ways. LQ stopped that and reformed and streamlined the initiation process into one uniform entity.
  • Occurred during first year in office.

53). Issuance of the Throne and President Reports [Atul & All officers]
  • Via mail and e-groups.
  • Included reports of all offices.

54). Implemented pledgee's greeting: "Evidence of Anthropology" to all chapters [Atul]
  • First learned about that passage during my high school days. When I was an undergrad MALIK I had my pledgees recite the passage. Then the passage started getting popular in the frat. I then shared it with the entire frat during my tenure as President.

55). National Community Service – Habitat for Humanity in Harlem [Bryon]

  • Rebuilding homes for low-income families of color (Year 1).

56). Implemented United Nations standard of Rules of Order at Conventions [Bryon]
  • The use of Placards, speaker timer, note runners, etc.
57). Creation of the first online National Fraternity Brochure [Atul & Luqman]

58). Facilitated the “Ideological Discourse Series” [All officers]
  • A series of three (3) intellectual national "Ideological Discourse Public Meetings" (in 2001 & 2002) to discuss, address, debate, ask questions, research, and institutionalize our philosophy, Fraternity's name and ideological purpose once and for all. We discussed the fraternity's 2 greek letters (at that time we were Malik Sigma Psi) and pseudo-greek existence while operating aaa supposed "African/Latino fraternity" existing in the 21st century.

59.) Facilitated "town hall meetings" where the membership was able to freely ask questions to the President and executive administration on any and all matters [Atul and all officers]

60). “NAME CHANGE” [from the Brotherhood]
  • The brotherhood voted its conscience, marking a historical, revolutionary, and bold decision to be the only operating truly African/Latino/Indigenous collegiate-based Fraternity in the world: the name was democratically changed from Malik Sigma Psi to MALIK Fraternity. A democratic decision based on majority votes at the 2002 national convention. The transformation from a para-African fraternity and/or para-Greek fraternity to a truly all African/Latino/Indigenous college fraternity with no Greek letters. Revolutionary concept and true/accurate cultural pride.
